What is Multi-Media Filter?
A Multi-Media Filter (MMF) is a type of depth filtration system designed to remove suspended solids, turbidity, and particulate matter from raw water. Unlike single-media filters, MMFs use multiple layers of filtration media—such as anthracite, sand, and garnet—to capture particles of different sizes at various depths.
👉 This multi-layer structure ensures higher filtration efficiency, longer filter runs, and lower pressure drops, making MMFs the preferred pretreatment solution before Reverse Osmosis (RO), Ultrafiltration (UF), and UV sterilizers.
How Does Multi-Media Filter Work?
Water flows downward through several layers of filtration media:
Anthracite coal – traps large suspended solids and turbidity.
Sand (fine silica) – captures medium-sized particles.
Garnet or gravel – retains fine particles down to 10–20 microns.
Support gravel – stabilizes the bed and distributes flow evenly.
Once the filter bed is clogged, a backwash process reverses the flow, removing trapped particles and restoring filter efficiency.

Preguntas frecuentes
A: Multimedia filters use several layers of filtration media, allowing deeper particle removal and better efficiency compared to single-layer sand filters.
A: Typically 1–3 times per week, depending on feed water turbidity, SDI, and suspended solids concentration.
A: No. MMFs mainly remove suspended solids. For microbiological removal, use UV sterilization or ultrafiltration as post-treatment.
A: Power generation, food & beverage, pharmaceuticals, desalination plants, and municipal water treatment.
A: On average, 3–5 years before replacement is required, depending on water quality and backwashing practices.
